for some players, I remember it being helpful, because it looks like there's a conflict for some people, between motherboard's audo drivers and Nvidia/AMD's audio drivers. you can disable your audio driver just for testing, if updating didn't help. before downloading the audio driver, make sure it's compatible with your motherboard's brand & model and operating system you're using. to do that you'll need to download it from motherboard manufacturer's website, and then install it. you can also update your audio drivers if they aren't. by default, for steam owners of WaW, it's located at Program Files (x86) / Steam / steamapps / common / Call of Duty World at War once the installation is complete, retry launching the game to see if that helps. try going to where the game is installed on disk and find DirectX folder.
you might consider updating DirectX if you believe there aren't any possible software conflicts. additionally, some anti-virus software may act weirdly towards CoD games, so you may also try putting this game's installation directory to the exclusion list of your anti-virus program. WaW is a pretty old game and isn't really optimized well, for setups with more than one monitor. if you currently use a multi-monitor setup, you can unplug the additional ones and try launching the game again. some examples are MSI Afterburner, NZXT CAM, Fraps, Nvidia Shadowplay, certain Razer mouse/keyboard utilities etc. if you have such programs running on background, you may try closing them temporarily, for testing purpose. for some players, certain applications are known to cause conflicts with this game.
